Do you know how Seminaarinmäki in Jyväskylä got its name? Remember who Uno Cygnaeus was and his connection to Jyväskylä? Have you considered the origins of Finnish education?
Teatterikone’s Aaro Vuotila and Annu Sankilampi bring to life the story of Uno Cygnaeus, the father of folk education, in a fun and vivid manner, sparking interest in Finnish local history among the audience!
Uno Cygnaeus (1810–1888) was a man whose contribution to promoting equality in Finnish education was exceptionally significant. His life story takes us from Hämeenlinna through Turku and Helsinki to Vyborg, and from there to the distant shores of Alaska and St. Petersburg, stopping in Jyväskylä, where he founded Finland’s first Finnish-speaking seminar. Uno’s life was full of phases, passion, and dedication, about which few nowadays know. History is the key to understanding where we come from, and through theater, we can do it powerfully; evoking feelings and thoughts.
Join us on a journey through the history of Uno Cygnaeus and Finnish education. Together, we can learn from the past and be inspired to build the future!
