The Keskellä Collective is organizing the “Traces of Contact Improvisation” course by Mirva Mäkinen. The course will be accompanied by musician Tapani Rinne.

Contact improvisation is based on the communication between two or more moving bodies in physical contact and the physical laws that guide their movement. It often involves rolling, falling, being upside down, following physical contact points, supporting a partner, and giving weight to another dancer. We aim for both physical support of another dancer during movement and gentle flying techniques. This workshop focuses on kinesthetic learning of movement without copying forms or shapes.

During the course, we will work with improvisation structures where the musician and dancers influence each other’s actions. The physical dialogue or trialogue with another dancer occurs through weight, balance, reflexes, and impulse.

This course is open to anyone interested in contact improvisation and does not require previous experience. We will rotate working partners throughout the course.

Mirva Mäkinen is an internationally recognized teacher of contact improvisation, a doctor of dance arts, and an accomplished dancer. Tapani Rinne is an award-winning composer-musician, one of the pioneers of techno jazz, and the leader of RinneRadio.

The Keskellä Collective is a multidisciplinary contemporary dance collective based in Jyväskylä, producing traditional stage works as well as dance with new forms of expression.
